Consider Traveling to the Nation's Capital

There is nowhere better to visit than the Nation's Capital, Washington, D.C., for anyone interested in the history of the Untied States of America. There is so much to see and do with no shortage of interesting museums, monuments, and historical sites and buildings such as the Capitol and the White House. The National Archives holds many of the original documents created from the beginnings of the government of the United States, including the Constitution.

One of the little known parts of American history which seems to be taught only slightly in most high school American History courses is the experience of Japanese Americans during World War II when the Constitution did not protect innocent persons who had done no wrong. Japanese Americans and their immigrant parents who were living on the West Coast of the United States after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, were forcibly removed from their homes and incarcerated in camps. The ten camps had been constructed in remote and desolate areas of the United States. Most of those imprisoned in this manner were citizens of the United States. They were incarcerated for the duration of the war after which they were released to try and resume their normal lives. It was a devastating experience for many people. Their story is an unfortunate part of history.

The Smithsonian Museums are popular attractions of Washington, D.C., where people can learn much, including about the history of the United States. The Smithsonian Museums generally have free admission. It could take more than a day to take in and absorb the information in just one of the museums. There is much knowledge to be gained from visiting the Smithsonian Museums. The Smithsonian American History Museum contains many items of interest from the nation's history.

Eleven of the nineteen Smithsonian Institution museums and galleries are located at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Among these are: The American History Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Air and Space Museum. The National Zoo is part of the Smithsonian Institution. The National Museum of African American History and Culture has been slated to open during 2015.

Visiting Washington, D.C. and learning more about the Untied States is a worthwhile venture for all those who are interested in history. It can be an awe-inspiring experience to see the sites, which are magnificent and inspiring. Anyone could benefit by considering travel to Washington, D.C.
